Geosynthetics benefits in green roofs

Updated: Oct 25, 2022

Green roofs are established building solutions which are increasingly used in urban areas. They have many benefits, such as increasing biodiversity, optimizing indoor climate, lowering energy consumption, reducing the ‘heat island’ effect, improving air quality and stormwater management, and improving the wellness and health of residents.

Using geosynthetics in a green roof structure is the perfect alternative to the use of substrate made from natural soils whose availability, cost and transport requirement can be challenging. Furthermore, geosynthetics offer additional benefits when compared to natural substrates: they provide a ventilation layer, a homogeneous drainage layer avoiding stagnant water, quick, easy, and cheap installation.
