The Ayrton Senna international race track at Goiânia in Brazil is a national symbol of motor sports, and a venue for events at the highest level, attracting thousands of tourists every year. Established more than 40 years ago, it was upgraded in 2013, and the track, which was already one of the best courses in the world, was completely improved with the aim of meeting all of the standards required by FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile).
Huesker played an important role in this major project with their HaTelit C product, an asphalt reinforcement solution. At the planning stage, an initial inspection revealed a high concentration of cracks on the surface of the track itself, due to fatigue in the asphalt layer caused by the stress of racing and the effects of the climate. There was also a significant potential for the propagation of these existing cracks into the new asphalt layer. This could have jeopardized the significant capital investment in the project.
HaTelit C 40/17 asphalt reinforcement manufactured by Huesker was used for the track rehabilitation. The works were carried out in five stages:
• Milling down to a depth of 8.0 cm so to reach a layer of the surface where the cracking was narrower
• Spraying the tack coat
• Laying the asphalt reinforcement HaTelit C 40/17 directly onto the milled surface
• Placement of the asphalt binder layer in a thickness of 4.5 cm
• Placement of the open-porous asphalt layer in a thickness of 3.5 cm, as wearing course
The flexibility and convenience of cutting the HaTelit C panels on the spot were important considerations in the planing. So that the work being carried out with the best possible results and without incurring any additional costs or any risk in the timetable for the project.
Today the Autódromo de Goiânia is one of the best Brazilian race tracks and sets the standard for people who love speed.
